History of Murchison Falls

The park was first gazetted in 1910 as the Bunyoro Game Reserve. In 1928, the reserve boundaries were extended. It later became a national park in 1952, making it the oldest in Uganda.

The park was once called Kabalega National Park but was later renamed Murchison Falls by Sir Samuel Baker, after Roderick Murchison, the president of the Royal Geographical Society.

In the early 1900s, people living in the park were relocated due to the spread of sleeping sickness.

Sir Samuel Baker and his wife Lady Florence were the first Europeans to see the falls. Other famous visitors include Theodore Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, Kanye West and his wife, and Ernest Hemingway.

In the 1960s, the park had large numbers of animals including over 26,000 buffaloes, 15,000 elephants, and 14,000 hippos. However, the numbers reduced due to war and poaching.

Conservation work is ongoing, but rhinos became extinct in the park.
